Manufacturing Technician 

Job Summary

Success in this role means efficiently supporting our additive manufacturing processes, ensuring the highest quality standards, and contributing to the overall success of our innovative projects. This role is vital to our operations and will involve collaboration with the Multi-Scale Additive Manufacturing lab at the University of Waterloo.

 

Responsibilities

Support Research Activities:

  • Set up, operate, and maintain additive manufacturing equipment (3D printers) following specific procedures and guidelines.

  • Monitor the production process and conduct regular quality checks on printed parts to ensure maximum usability.

  • Assist in the development and testing of new materials and processes, providing technical expertise.

 

Assist Graduate Students and Research Engineers:

  • Provide technical support and guidance to graduate students and research engineers on their projects.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues with manufacturing equipment and processes efficiently.

  • Support software-based design, test, measurement, and control systems such as Rhino 7 and Microsoft Office.

 

General Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, adhering to safety protocols and regulations at all times.

  • Manage assigned equipment, including repairs, calibration, loans, and 3D printer cleaning.

  • Maintain Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and equipment inventory.

  • Conduct workplace inspections and ensure compliance with training levels and safety standards.

 

 

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Diploma in Engineering Technology or equivalent.

  • Proven experience as a Manufacturing Technician or similar role in the manufacturing industry.

  • Experience with additive manufacturing technology, including KUKA and Fanuc robots, as well as PLC and HMI programming.

 

Technical Skills:

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to operate and program additive manufacturing machinery.

  • Proficiency in using software tools related to manufacturing and design (e.g., Rhino 7, Microsoft Office).

  • Basic computer skills for data entry and equipment monitoring.

  • Knowledge of safety procedures and guidelines in a manufacturing environment.

 

Interpersonal Skills:

  • Excellent communication skills to effectively collaborate with team members and support production goals.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team.

 

Physical Demands:

  • Requires physical activity, including lifting and moving materials and equipment.

  • Ability to stand for extended periods while operating machinery.

 

Working Environment:

  • Primarily work in a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility.

  • Occasional work at the Multi-Scale Additive Manufacturing lab at the University of Waterloo.
